CONSUMER SUPPORT WORKER:

NOTICE OF CONTRACT

CLOSING: August 25, 2011

ONE Contract with the Older Adult Rehabilitation Program

20 hours per month (or 4 hours per week), 6 month contract (Sep 2, 2010 to March 31, 2011)

Schedule is Fridays 9AM to 12:30PM plus 30 minutes for calling during the week.

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and staff, and in conjunction with treatment personnel, you will work with older adult clients in a social and wellness group. This group is on Friday mornings and designed for older adult clients who are Chinese, thus the ability to speak Cantonese and/or Mandarin is required. The successful candidate will be a well-organized individual who exhibits initiative, flexibility, sound judgement and good interpersonal skills. Duties include assisting clients in a group setting to socialize, participate in group activities and achieve social and wellness goals and/or acquiring new skills or linking with community resources. You may also be asked to phone clients ahead of the group time and cancel or book Handydart rides for clients. Also includes communicating all relevant information verbally and in writing to pertinent staff; and attending quarterly consumer / peer support worker meetings at the unit.

Qualifications: The successful individual will:

1. have completed a Peer Support Training program or have equivalent training or experience
2. have personal experience receiving services within the mental health system (required)
3. be able to be a role model to people recovering from a serious mental illness by sharing common life experiences and practical information
4. have effective strategies for dealing with stress
5. be able to work cooperatively with mental health staff, consumers and family members
6. be able to work with a culturally diverse population
7. be willing to respect other people’s right to decline assistance
8. be able to adequately access public transportation,
9. be able to present in a professional manner, and
10. be empathetic, patient and supportive.
11. can speak Cantonese and/or Mandarin.

Duration: 6 Months, Weekly.

Pay and Hours: $12.00 an hour, up to 20 hours maximum a month.
