Re: The Onset/Cause of Bipolar Disorder
Here's another comment for Issue #3 The Onset of Bipolar Disorder. I came across a book in the book list and got it out of the library. It's the one called "Surviving Manic Depression" by E Fuller Torrey and Michael B Knable. Well there's a whole chapter on other things that can cause the onset of mania. Here's the list - street drugs, prescription, over-the-counter or herbal medications, infections, head injuries, other brain disorders, and other illnesses. So those two people I know who woke up from surgery in a full blown manic episode may have been affected by the anaesthetic. Possible. But don't take my word for it.
Also, the authors called the chapter "Conditions Sometimes Confused with Manic-Depressive Illness" so I'm guessing they don't consider these episodes Bipolar Disorder. Still, the two people I know continued on with the symptoms of the disorder so it seems they then had it. Hmmm.....
Anyway, you can get the book at the library if you want to know more about it.
